    Types of Tango Music

There are essentially three types of tango played at social dancing venues - so called milongas:

    Tango
This form is makes up the majority of the music played.
    Milonga
A fun dance with African influences: easy to dance but absolutely wonderful when you are proficient!! The speed of the music ranges from the pedestrian to the outrageously fast - but its always fun!!
    Tango Vals (Waltz)
In 3/4 time like The European Waltz but importantly you don't have to step on every beat. It is a very beautiful and flowing dance where ganchos have no place.
    Tango Nuevo
There is a lot of new tango music about and much of it is fun to dance to although you wouldn't want to do it all the time. Having said that, it's not much fun hearing the same style of bandoneon playing for four hours!! Current faves are Bajofondo. Gotan Project are also well known.
    Non-Tango
Tango can be danced to any music that has a beat and all good DJs have a range of music that is wonderful to dance to.

    How do I find it?

Although the big music stores have a selection of tango music in the World Music sections you will quickly find that the what on offer is inadequate. Even in other countries such as Spain the big stores generally cater for the mass market.

It's best to ask the DJs for their playlist and source the music from Amazon or specialist dealers (CDX).

    Tango Music Recommendations

Generally speaking most music stores stock anthologies of tango music. Unfortunately, the selections can be variable so that like most CDs of music there will be one or two good tracks surrounded by mediocrity.

Generally speaking once dancers have been "bitten by the bug" that is tango they start to recognise many of the composers and orchestras.
At that point sourcing the music becomes much easier because tango music is often sold by composer and/or orchestra.
All the great orchestras were/are known by their leader e.g. Canaro, D'Arienzo.

We play the entire range of traditional and more modern music. A selection of the traditional composers/band leaders are shown below:

    Alfredo de Angelis
    Juan D'Arienzo
    Eduardo Arolas Rodolfo Biagi
    Julio De Caro
    Miguel Calo
    Franciso Canaro
    Ignacio Corsini Edgardo Donato
    Roberto Firpo
    Osvaldo Fresedo
    Astor Piazzola
    Osvaldo Pugliese
    Carlos Di Sarli
    Anibal Troilo
